Safe door solutions for escape routes
Escape route requirements are based on various criteria, including, for example, the type and use of the building, the use of the individual rooms, the maximum number of people permitted, the location of the escape routes and knowledge of the local conditions, etc.
There are two different systems for escape route doors: Firstly, emergency exit devices in accordance with EN 179, and secondly, panic exit devices in accordance with EN 1125.
Emergency exit devices in accordance with EN 179 are used when public use of the building or parts of the building can be ruled out and the users are familiar with the surroundings and operation. Typical locations are private residential complexes, offices, non-public administrative and industrial areas, non-public areas of event buildings, airports, banks and shopping centers.
Panic exit devices in accordance with EN 1125 are often used in public buildings. It can be assumed that visitors do not know the escape and rescue routes or how the door locks work, but must be able to open the doors intuitively in an emergency. Examples of applications include hospitals, public administrations, buildings with public traffic, schools, universities, cinemas, concert halls and other event buildings, airports and transportation buildings.

Maintenance
Escape route doors fulfill a central function in personal protection and must function perfectly at all times. To ensure the "ability to release" in accordance with SN EN 179, SN EN 1125 and SN EN 13637, monthly maintenance or inspection is required every 50,000 door cycles. Operators are obliged to regularly check all relevant components such as locks, handles, panic functions, hinges, door closers and seals for function and tight fit. Door leaves, glass inserts and frames must also be inspected and maintained. Escape route doors must be able to be opened easily and fully at all times, without the use of aids - and the escape route must remain freely accessible. Maintenance may only be carried out by qualified specialists and defects must be rectified immediately. All measures are documented in the maintenance log. A maintenance contract with RWD Schlatter is recommended. Further information on the subject of maintenance can be found here.
